Router Migration Finished

22 Dec 2024

Yesterday, we completed the router migration! We transitioned from a router running Debian on a VM to a router running FreeBSD on a dedicated server. The new server features ten 10 Gbit ports, and we’ve set up MLAG on multiple interfaces to multiple switches for redundancy. With this upgrade, rylx was able to add another node to the VM cluster, enabling seamless VM migrations between nodes.

Additionally, we successfully established peering with the SIX route servers, as mentioned in our Seattle IX Update.

There were a few challenges during the migration, which we’ve noted below:

  • Assigned the wrong VLANs to the wrong ports.
  • Both routers temporarily shared the IX IP addresses, causing port security to disconnect us.
  • Locked myself out a couple of times due to firewall rules.

Despite these hurdles, the migration went smoothly, especially considering we only had a rough plan for executing it.

We’ve noticed a few errors on one of the ports, but this should be easy to resolve.

This marks the completion of our first major router migration!
